History

The area was named after John M. Gardner, who was a homesteader in the area. He sold a supposedly haunted house, known then as the Kent House, which later became the Gardnerville Hotel. Shortly after the hotel opened, Gardnerville was born. Because of its location along the popular route to the Esmeralda Mining District, the town served as a feed and rest stop for travelers. However, by 1885, the town began to grow with the introduction of industrial farming in the valley. After settlers came to open many shops, saloons and hotels along Main Street, Gardnerville became an important part of Carson Valley as well a hub for commercial and community activity.
